I write about the things that interest me: philosophy, finance, social enterprise, politics and art. I aim to write well and to write clearly, but to avoid oversimplification.
There is a saying, beloved of some philosophers, that if you are unable to express an idea clearly you have not understood it properly.
To which I would add, if a complex problem has a simple solution then someone else will have thought of it already.
On this site you will find a selection of my writing, some of which has been published elsewhere and some of which is only available here.
Each time a new piece of writing is added to the site it will also be profiled on this page. The work has been divided into three categories.
Shorter pieces are classified as articles
Longer pieces are classified as essays
Pieces that comment specifically on the work of others are classified as reviews

Michael Sandel's book, What Money Can't Buy: the Moral Limits of Markets, based on his Reith Lectures of 2009, gives support to the current fashion in politics that says that economic activity must be constrained by ethical principles, and that in recent years these principles have been inadequate in content and insufficient in enforcement. In my latest review I assess the merits of Sandel's presentation of this argument.
In January I gave evidence to the Public Accounts Committee at the House of Commons on the subject of the regulation of consumer credit. There is a long video recording of the session here. My evidence starts at 1 hour and 51 minutes into the video.
